Primary School in Achchuvelly stands as one of the most respected primary schools in the village, serving children from Year 1 to 5. With 210 students and 10 dedicated teachers, it’s often the first choice for parents who want the best possible start for their children. Many pupils who begin their journey here go on to study at Achchuvelly Central College or even attend top schools in Jaffna town.
But behind the school’s good reputation lies a harsh truth: over 60% of the children come from families struggling to survive. Parents work long hours as labourers, in shops, or in local markets — often without earning enough to properly feed their families. Despite the school’s strengths, poverty continues to hold many students back.
What makes this school especially meaningful is its place in the hearts of the Atchuvelly diaspora. Many of you reading this may have once sat in these same classrooms, walked through the same gates, and carried the same dreams. You remember what it was like. And sadly, not much has changed — but with your support, it could.
At the AKAS Foundation, we are working to ensure that every child at Primary School has what they need to learn with confidence — from school bags and books to basic classroom essentials. Because when we support them at this stage, we don’t just change their present — we uplift an entire generation.
